What do The Beatles, Kinks, and Radiohead all have in common? They used the VOX AC30. Cliff Richard would have concerts with fans screaming at the top of their lungs. While it made for an incredible time for both the fans and Richard, the original Vox amplifier (AC15) was completely overpowered to the point that you could not hear the guitars over the singing of fans. So in 1959, at Hank Marvin’s request, the Vox AC30 was introduced as the “big brother” of the AC15.

This amp is one of the most classic and easily recognizable British amplifiers. Earlier we mentioned The Beatles used it quite a bit in their set up and so did The Shadows, Rory Gallagher, Brian May (Queen), etc. You name it and even if the musician doesn’t use it, they’ve likely heard of it! It’s one of those pieces that doesn’t lose its value because it can be used for such a diverse grouping of musical genres.

After much trial and error and development of the Vox AC30, in 2004 Vox introduced a new series called the AC30 Custom Classic. The claim is that it combines different parts of the original AC30 with what Vox classifies as a “boutique of features.” The specs include two inputs: Top Boost and Normal, an Input Link Switch (this helps to blend channels), a Brilliance Switch, and knobs for Normal Volume, and Top Boost Volume, Treble. There are tons of features on this one amp which means you don’t even have to bring a pedalboard along if you don’t want to or it can help amplify and mix everything from your pedalboard in a seamless way.
